DECK TECH: Mogg the Decks [Pauper]

Art credit: Kevin Sidharta

At the end of March 2025 a key component of my Goblin Synthesizer pauper deck was banned. Losing Kuldotha Rebirth meant that running all the additional artifacts seemed almost pointless.

Because that deck was essentially the tier 1 Burn deck with my own suboptimal changes added I couldn't truly call it my own brew. However I have now put together a new goblin deck for pauper, combining elements I learned from playing with the old list, and one that is something I can claim as my own brew from scratch.

May I present Mogg the Decks; Goblin Pirates!

Knowing that Goblin Tomb Raider was one of the strongest creatures in the previous lists I started there, then adding Reckless Lackey as that had also performed well. This is where I remembered they are both Pirates so I looked at other goblin pirate commons; Fanatical Firebrand and Impulsive Pilferer, both went into the deck.

The  reason I then went for this focus on pirates was my inclusion of Fiery Cannonade which deals 2 damage to all non-pirate creatures, I had included in my changes to the old burn list. Now I thought that including this in the mainboard could give me a strong game one advantage against other creature decks.

But that was all the available goblin pirates in the format, what else to include? Goblin Bushwhacker was a no-brainer so that went in. Sarpadian Simulacrum was an artifact creature which enabled Tomb Raider, plus it had the late game removal ability which helps.

To finish off the list I wanted goblins that somehow worked around me board wiping myself. Goblin Arsonist and Dynamite Diver both deal 1 damage when they die, I went for Arsonist as it felt a little more on flavour. Then finally Goblin Sledder and Goblin Raider have the ability to sac a goblin to grant a +1/+1 buff to another creature, this is really helpful to get around blockers and even making the most of my pseudo-one-sided board wipes. Initially I went for Raider as again it was on flavour, however it doesn't have a foil printing so the inclusion of Sledder over Raider is purely for this reason. I'm in the process of foiling out this list.

That was it for creatures and I chucked in the typical 4 Lightning Bolts and 4 Goblin Grenades. 17 lands again consisting of 4 Great Furnace to enable Tomb Raider, then 13 mountains.

I played with this list on MTGO for a while and realised I was missing something. Goblin Blast-Runner had been really strong in the previous Burn list. I toiled with cutting a mountain and a Cannonade to squeeze 2 in but it didn't seem that good, I tried shaving other cards to make room but then ultimately decided to cut Impulsive Pilferer completely so I could fit all 4 Blast-Runners. Pilferer did seem kinda lackluster compared to all the other cards anyway. Then I had done it, my list was complete and I was satisfied with it.

The sideboard is almost identical to my Synthesizer list however because I have the Cannonades mainboard it freed up two slots for additional Red Blast effects which are always helpful in many match-ups

I took my new list to a pauper event at my LGS and cleaned up, my only loss was to U Faeries but I feel this was only because I was mana screwed game 1 then couldn't pull ahead game 2. Since playing more games on MTGO I'm really happy with how the deck performs and also what nice little synergies it has. Sledder helps Blast-Runner and is useful for getting through blockers, Arsonist Grenades for 6, even our Cannonades have more reach if we let an Arsonist die to it. Late game Lackey can draw us that final card, Simulacrum can clear a big creature and Firebrand is great for pinging that final 1 point of damage wherever it's needed. Firebrand is another way to power up Blast-Runner.

I guess its rather obvious how proud I am of myself. Please do let me know if you try the deck and how you doing with it.
As always, leave a comment below to let me know what you think. Cheers.

Goblin Foundations

Magic Foundations is a new set due to launch on November 15th. Replacing the old core set model, Foundations will remain Standard legal for the next 5 years. The set will bring 15 goblins into the Standard format, of which 4 of them are brand new goblins. This is very welcome after the last two set releases contained exactly zero goblins. Let's take a look at the new cards we're getting! Dropkick Bomber is definitely the one to watch out for in the latest release of goblin cards. A new goblin lord to bolster our armies is always welcome. This card will definitely see play in Standard, Pioneer and EDH, but also possibly Modern and Legacy. It's second ability can be viewed as both a way to give our goblins a bit of reach and evasion but also a construed sacrifice outlet. Courageous Goblin isn't as exciting. A 2/2 body for two mana is more than fair for an average goblin, but this would be better suited to decks with bigger creatures to support so the +1/+0 and Menace can ...

Mogg of the Month November '24: General Kreat, the Boltbringer

November has been a very good month for goblin players. With the release of Magic Foundations and Foundations: Jumpstart,  both featuring a plethora of exciting new goblin cards, it was a little difficult to pick which one to feature this month. But we can only have one, and this time around... Mogg of the Month for November 2024 is General Kreat, the Boltbringer ! This was the biggest response I have ever had from my fellow goblin players when asking who to feature as Mogg of the Month, and while there are always some great suggestions, General Kreat and one other new card really stood out. Ultimately I have decided to feature Kreat this month, but there is a very high chance that next month will also feature a new goblin card Featuring a brand new card as Mogg of the Month can leave me with little to write about, however it is clear that General Kreat is going to make waves wherever it sees play. Printed in Foundations: Jumpstart -  which is the third edition of Jumpstart -...

Duskmourn: House of Zero Goblins

Another set with no goblins! Don't get me wrong. I love cliche horror tropes as much as the next guy, but surely goblins would have fit into this set somewhere. Bloomburrow was understandable, goblins aren't cute and fluffy therefore wouldn't fit into that set, but come on! Would a goblin be out of place here?  Anyway rant over. We did get a couple new lands: I doubt either will see much play in our decks other than standard. Pioneer and above already has a much better manabase available to it. The Duskmourn set and play environment however does seem exciting and a stark contrast to the fluffy wonderland of the previous one. The standard format should look amusing while people equip a chainsaw to a mouse for the next 3 years. Looks like the next set is going to be MTG Foundations, and I can only assume its going to be packed full of goblin staples to ensure that goblins become playable in standard again. -Trashman Disappointed Goblin Lord

Mogg of the Month October '24: Sensation Gorger

So another month passes by and that means it's time for the 5th installment of Mogg of the Month. This month I have decided to feature one of the more obscure cards in our collections, but one that is certainly worthy of a slot in our commander decks Mogg of the Month for October 2024 is Sensation Gorger! Printed only once way back in 2008 as part of the Morningtide set from Lorwyn block, Sensation Gorger is a card that some goblin players may not even know about. There are two things to note about Sensation Gorger, it's insane art and it's wicked ability. First let's look at it's art. What is even going on here? It gets worse the longer you look at it! Sensation Gorger's ability is fantastic for our EDH decks with a high number of goblin cards: Kinship — At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with Sensation Gorger, you may reveal it. If you do, each player discards their hand, then draws fou...

Mogg of the Month September '24: Conspicuous Snoop

It's another month and another installment of Mogg of the Month. I could only hold off for so long before awarding it to this multi format all-star goblin... Mogg of the Month for September 2024 is Conspicuous Snoop! Printed in the M21 core set way back before the pandemic. It seems so long ago now, but Snoop is a relatively newer card compared to the multitudes of goblins available to us. Conspicuous Snoop quickly became a powerhouse in goblin decks across multiple formats. From its hilarious artwork to its powerful abilities, Snoop has earned its spot as a fan favorite and a competitive staple in the goblin tribe. Conspicuous Snoop brought something goblins didn’t have before—a balance between card advantage, board control, and combo potential. It’s no longer just about being aggressive with "8-whack" strategies; with Snoop, goblin decks can play a more calculated, midrange game, or pivot into a full-on combo deck depending on what’s needed. What Snoop did for goblin ...
