It's time again for another installment of Mogg of the Month. This time it's a goblin that has proven itself a more than useful staple in every single format since it's inception.
Mogg of the Month for September 2025 is Skirk Prospector!
It was first printed in Onslaught more than 20 years ago in 2002 and has since reprinted in Duel Decks, Dominaria, Dominaria Remastered and even a rare World Championship (2003) deck. Skirk Prospector has been a reliable staple in goblin decks ever since.
I started playing Magic the Gathering just after Rivals of Ixalan in 2018 so my first prerelease was Dominaria, which had 3 new goblin cards and 3 goblin reprints. One of those reprints was Skirk Prospector
"Sacrifice a goblin: Add R"
Goblins -unlike Elves- don't have many ways to generate mana, more recently we have gotten Ignoble Hierach and Howlsquad Heavy, but Skirk Prospector was the first goblin to grant us this kind of ability. A 1 mana 1/1 which counts a body early game and instantly allows us to play ahead of curve from the next turn will always prove advantageous, then in the later turns being able to sacrifice other goblins to ramp out into bigger threats has made Prospector a key goblin card for over 20 years.
Here's what others have said about Skirk Prospector
"What a shocker, it’s not the six-mana 'maybe win the game' card that’s the problem, it’s the highly efficient 1-drop mana engine."
"Goblins needs bodies, not mana... unless you're doing aristocratic combo goblins. Then you need a snack."
"There’s no feeling in Magic quite like building a smart deck out of stupid cards."
That's all for this month's article. Leave a comment below and tell us what your favourite goblin is and it could be featured on Mogg of the Month!
