Mogg of the Month September '25: Skirk Prospector

It's time again for another installment of Mogg of the Month. This time it's a goblin that has proven itself a more than useful staple in every single format since it's inception. Mogg of the Month for September 2025 is Skirk Prospector! It was first printed in Onslaught more than 20 years ago in 2002 and has since reprinted in Duel Decks, Dominaria, Dominaria Remastered and even a rare World Championship (2003) deck. Skirk Prospector has been a reliable staple in goblin decks ever since. I started playing Magic the Gathering just after Rivals of Ixalan in 2018 so my first prerelease was Dominaria, which had 3 new goblin cards and 3 goblin reprints. One of those reprints was Skirk Prospector "Sacrifice a goblin: Add R" Goblins -unlike Elves- don't have many ways to generate mana, more recently we have gotten Ignoble Hierach and Howlsquad Heavy, but Skirk Prospector was the first goblin to grant us this kind of ability. A 1 mana 1/1 which counts a body early ga...

Mogg of the Month August '25: Legion Loyalist

Another month means another Mogg to feature, this time we're continuing with another multi format staple Mogg of the Month for August 2025 is Legion Loyalist Printed in Gatecrash in 2013, this goblin can really change the outcome of a game from the moment it is played. For starters it's a 1 mana 1/1 with haste, which in my opinion meets the basic requirement for a playable goblin, but this goblin does so much more. "Battalion — Whenever this creature and at least two other creatures attack, creatures you control gain first strike and trample until end of turn and can’t be blocked by creature tokens this turn." This ability is the difference between having our board state stall out or push through. Giving our goblins first strike helps us apply the pressure on our opponents, no longer trading blockers but actually clearing the path. Trample becomes super relevant if we're swinging with cards like Goblin Piledriver, Muxus or any other high power goblins. Finally ...

Mogg of the Month July '25: Goblin Piledriver

After a bit of a break I now have 7 Mogg of the Months to catch up on. I have every intention of getting them all done (while a little late) so there is at least an archive of them for future reference. So without further ado... Mogg of the Month for July 2025 is Goblin Piledriver! First printed in the Onslaught back in 2002 Piledriver has been a staple of goblin decks ever since. An unassuming 1/2 body for 2 mana doesn't immediately cause concern but it's abilities are what make it a standout goblin. "Protection from blue (This creature can’t be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, or enchanted by anything blue.) Whenever this creature attacks, it gets +2/+0 until end of turn for each other attacking Goblin." The protection from blue has always remained relevant meaning it can't be bounced back to hand or blocked by big old blue bomb creatures but the real magic is the second ability. Gaining +2/+0 for each other attacking goblin can very quickly have your Piledriver...

Mogg of the Month CATCH UP: January - June '25

It's been quite a while since I've had the time to write for the page, but hopefully I can now commit a few hours a week to keep things updated. As I've missed a few Mogg of the Month posts I have decided to combine all of the missing ones in to this one mega-post for January to June 2025. Mogg of the Month: January - June 2025 Goblin Lords! What better way to combine 6 months worth of entries than to group together goblins with a common theme. These are some of the most useful cards we can have in goblin decks because of the buffs they bring to our board state. While there are quite a few other goblin lords available the 6 I have chosen are 3 classic goblins and 3 newer cards.

Mogg of the Month December '24: Searslicer Goblin

Another month means another Mogg to feature, and this is another goblin released in the new Foundations set. November's entry was a close call between this card and General Kreat. Most of you probably figured it would be this card that we'd be featuring next Mogg of the Month for December 2024 is Searslicer Goblin! Unlike General Kreat, Searslicer Goblin was printed into the standard Foundations set rather than Jumpstart. This means it is legal to play in Standard, Pioneer and Modern as well as all the other formats that allow the Jumpstart cards. As we've had some time between release and the writing of this article I do not have to speculate on how good Searslicer Goblin will be. It is already clear this goblin is very playable and slots into goblin decks in both Modern and Legacy, plus it's seeing play in Standard and Pioneer straight off the bat. Let's have a look at why... It's a two mana 2/1 with the following ability  Raid — At the beginning of your en...

Mogg of the Month November '24: General Kreat, the Boltbringer

November has been a very good month for goblin players. With the release of Magic Foundations and Foundations: Jumpstart,  both featuring a plethora of exciting new goblin cards, it was a little difficult to pick which one to feature this month. But we can only have one, and this time around... Mogg of the Month for November 2024 is General Kreat, the Boltbringer ! This was the biggest response I have ever had from my fellow goblin players when asking who to feature as Mogg of the Month, and while there are always some great suggestions, General Kreat and one other new card really stood out. Ultimately I have decided to feature Kreat this month, but there is a very high chance that next month will also feature a new goblin card Featuring a brand new card as Mogg of the Month can leave me with little to write about, however it is clear that General Kreat is going to make waves wherever it sees play. Printed in Foundations: Jumpstart -  which is the third edition of Jumpstart -...

Mogg of the Month October '24: Sensation Gorger

So another month passes by and that means it's time for the 5th installment of Mogg of the Month. This month I have decided to feature one of the more obscure cards in our collections, but one that is certainly worthy of a slot in our commander decks Mogg of the Month for October 2024 is Sensation Gorger! Printed only once way back in 2008 as part of the Morningtide set from Lorwyn block, Sensation Gorger is a card that some goblin players may not even know about. There are two things to note about Sensation Gorger, it's insane art and it's wicked ability. First let's look at it's art. What is even going on here? It gets worse the longer you look at it! Sensation Gorger's ability is fantastic for our EDH decks with a high number of goblin cards: Kinship — At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with Sensation Gorger, you may reveal it. If you do, each player discards their hand, then draws fou...

Mogg of the Month September '24: Conspicuous Snoop

It's another month and another installment of Mogg of the Month. I could only hold off for so long before awarding it to this multi format all-star goblin... Mogg of the Month for September 2024 is Conspicuous Snoop! Printed in the M21 core set way back before the pandemic. It seems so long ago now, but Snoop is a relatively newer card compared to the multitudes of goblins available to us. Conspicuous Snoop quickly became a powerhouse in goblin decks across multiple formats. From its hilarious artwork to its powerful abilities, Snoop has earned its spot as a fan favorite and a competitive staple in the goblin tribe. Conspicuous Snoop brought something goblins didn’t have before—a balance between card advantage, board control, and combo potential. It’s no longer just about being aggressive with "8-whack" strategies; with Snoop, goblin decks can play a more calculated, midrange game, or pivot into a full-on combo deck depending on what’s needed. What Snoop did for goblin ...

Mogg of the Month August '24: Goblin Wizard

This is the third installment of our new monthly feature where we pick out a goblin card from among the hundreds available to us in Magic the Gathering™. We've done a brand new card, we've done an older iconic card, this time we're going to look at one of only two goblins to appear on the infamous Reserved List. Mogg of the Month for August 2024 is Goblin Wizard! Goblin Wizard holds a peculiar spot in the ranks of goblin cards. Once upon a time it was the most overpowered goblin in all of Magic. These days it has been overshadowed by cards like Muxus and Goblin Lackey.  No longer seeing play in even Legacy or Vintage decks, it is only really played in goblin tribal EDH lists. The Wizard offers a unique ability of being able to put any goblin from your hand into play at instant speed and can also grant protection from white, which is super relevant in EDH due to the massive prevalence of white board wipes in the format. Possibly the most expensive goblin card (with the exc...

Mogg of the Month July '24: Goblin Matron

Last month our brand new feature showcased a brand new card. This month it seemed right to feature an older card, so without further ado: Mogg of the Month for July 2024 is Goblin Matron! How could it not be?  This is one of, if not the most iconic goblin cards in all of Magic the Gathering™. First printed in 7th Edition then Urzas Saga, Matron has been a staple of goblin decks ever since. Initially only available to Vintage and Legacy decks, it wasn't legal in Modern until it was reprinted in Modern Horizons 1 in 2019. Since then it has enabled goblin decks to move away from the fast and aggressive "8-whack" style decks and into the more interactive midrange and combo builds. A guaranteed "4 of" in every goblin deck. Goblin Matron allows us to search our library for any goblin card. It could be a combo piece, a silver bullet to get us out of a sticky situation, a lord effect or Ringleader, or even another Goblin Matron. Always finding exactly what we need for j...

Mogg of the Month June '24: Mogg Mob

Mogg of the Month will be an ongoing feature of Goblin Gathering going forward. Each month either members of the goblin community or I will pick out a goblin card and declare it Mogg of the Month. The cards can be picked out for any reason and don't need to meet any criteria other than the obvious "it's a goblin". This means it could be a brand new card like this month's pick, an older card that has seen play in thousands of decks, or an obscure forgotten card that you may never have heard of. So without further ado.. Mogg of the Month: June 2024 - Mogg Mob This very first edition of Mogg of the Month is awarded to the brand new Mogg Mob as chosen by followers on our Facebook page.  For such a new card to be chosen there isn't a whole lot to write about besides what we see on the card and what we might expect from it. Until it starts being seen in top goblin decks we won't know how well it performs. But let us have a look; A 3/3 body for three red mana wit...
