Goblin Foundations

Magic Foundations is a new set due to launch on November 15th. Replacing the old core set model, Foundations will remain Standard legal for the next 5 years. The set will bring 15 goblins into the Standard format, of which 4 of them are brand new goblins. This is very welcome after the last two set releases contained exactly zero goblins. Let's take a look at the new cards we're getting! Dropkick Bomber is definitely the one to watch out for in the latest release of goblin cards. A new goblin lord to bolster our armies is always welcome. This card will definitely see play in Standard, Pioneer and EDH, but also possibly Modern and Legacy. It's second ability can be viewed as both a way to give our goblins a bit of reach and evasion but also a construed sacrifice outlet. Courageous Goblin isn't as exciting. A 2/2 body for two mana is more than fair for an average goblin, but this would be better suited to decks with bigger creatures to support so the +1/+0 and Menace can ...

Duskmourn: House of Zero Goblins

Another set with no goblins! Don't get me wrong. I love cliche horror tropes as much as the next guy, but surely goblins would have fit into this set somewhere. Bloomburrow was understandable, goblins aren't cute and fluffy therefore wouldn't fit into that set, but come on! Would a goblin be out of place here?  Anyway rant over. We did get a couple new lands: I doubt either will see much play in our decks other than standard. Pioneer and above already has a much better manabase available to it. The Duskmourn set and play environment however does seem exciting and a stark contrast to the fluffy wonderland of the previous one. The standard format should look amusing while people equip a chainsaw to a mouse for the next 3 years. Looks like the next set is going to be MTG Foundations, and I can only assume its going to be packed full of goblin staples to ensure that goblins become playable in standard again. -Trashman Disappointed Goblin Lord

No Blooming Goblins

A Magic the Gathering™ set with no goblins? Bloomburrow seems to be becoming an incredibly popular set for drafting. Flooding the standard carpool with cute fuzzy critters that will now stick around for another three years. But for goblin players the set seems lackluster. After researching the set for new goblin cards I was left disappointed. Even the sets two changeling creatures do absolutely nothing for us. What about support cards? Anything that allows us to "choose a creature type"? Well there is one standout card, a land that falls somewhere between Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Gaea's Cradle Three Tree City looks like the one card in this set that goblin players can get excited about. Possibly a bit slow for Legacy or Modern, but certainly playable in Pioneer and EDH. Otherwise a disappointing set.  Have you seen a card in Bloomburrow that I have missed? Leave a comment below

UPDATED: Mogg Horizons

UPDATE: More cards have been added to this list and some rumoured cards confirmed. Modern Horizons 3 is on its way next month! While a lot of cards have been leaked and rumoured about, here is a rundown on some of the confirmed goblins in the next "straight to modern" set! Warren Soultrader is a new sac outlet. It allows us to sacrifice a creature and pay 1 life to create a treasure. Arguably worse than Skirk Prospector as it is also costing us a life point but good in that we can make any colour mana with the treasure. It has already been broken as a combo piece in Zombie decks but goblins could maybe go down the Revel in Riches combo route. Skoa, Embermage seems incredibly underpowered at 6 mana. Muxus is 6 mana and brings an awful lot more value to a game than Skoa. It is notably at common rarity so there may be a way to slot him into a pauper deck but currently the goblin community is not impressed with this goblin wizard. Mogg Mob will certainly see play in any decks tha...

New Krenko card!

Krenko, Baron of Tin Street is an all new version of our beloved boss. Krenko has gone from a Mob Boss, to a Kingpin in War of the Spark, and now has title of Baron in Murders at Karlov Manor. The new card fits into the long running theme of goblins breaking artifacts, and the two effects on the Baron work really well together. In modern and legacy formats we have Treasure tokens, Aether Vials and Chrome Mox that we can sacrifice to put +1/+1 counters on our board but where this card will really shine is in commander where run many more artifacts and can sacrifice our early mana rocks for late game buffs. The Baron pairs really nicely with Crime Novelist from the same set. Novelist will create the red mana required to pay for the Barons second ability. Wether it be in prerelease, draft or standard these two are going to pair really well together. There may even be a combo discovered yet using Sword of the Meek in modern. Leave a comment if you think you can find a w...

Krenko, Remastered

We've had an early look at some of the cards in the upcoming Ravnica Remastered set due in January 2024. This set brings us retro border shock-lands and loads of playable reprints, but more importantly they have brought us a new art for our beloved Krenko, Mob Boss! This will be the 7th time Krenko has been printed, but the first time we have seen a new art for him. Personally I think it looks amazing but if this isn't to your liking we are also being blessed with a retro border version of the original art This version is going to look much better alongside other retro border goblins such as the new retro Matron, Pashalik Mons, Kiki-jiki and Gempalm.  Cards having multiple versions available make it more interesting for collectors like myself to decide on which versions they prefer.  I won't be making any difficult choices though, I'll have to take a playset in foil and non-foil of both versions. Another worthy mention is the new etched foil and...

Woes of Eldraine

Spoiler season is here!  Wilds of Eldraine seems to be a very interesting set, revisiting some of the much loved fairytale tropes we saw in Throne of Eldraine back in 2019. There does however, seem to be a disturbing lack of playable goblins in the set. Granted our first visit to Eldraine only gave us Grumgully, the Generous - which at best only saw fringe play in eternal formats - he was much better than our options this time round Picnic Ruiner and Redcap Gutter-Dweller do nothing to inspire any sense of hope within me and I predict they will not see any play in formats beyond limited and standard. I supposed we have been spoiled by recent cards and maybe goblins just aren't in need of extra support at the moment. Maybe we should be grateful for what we have. But the full set has not been revealed yet so maybe, just maybe, Wizards will give us a critter to get excited about.
