Mogg of the Month CATCH UP: January - June '25

It's been quite a while since I've had the time
to write for the page, but hopefully I can now commit a few hours a week to keep things updated.

As I've missed a few Mogg of the Month posts I have decided to combine all of the missing ones in to this one mega-post for January to June 2025.

Mogg of the Month: January - June 2025
Goblin Lords!

What better way to combine 6 months worth of entries than to group together goblins with a common theme. These are some of the most useful cards we can have in goblin decks because of the buffs they bring to our board state.
While there are quite a few other goblin lords available the 6 I have chosen are 3 classic goblins and 3 newer cards.

Goblin King: The OG goblin lord and the very definition of what a lord should be. First printed in the original Alpha set where surprisingly there were only two other goblins for it to buff. Granting +1/+1 and mountain walk to all our other goblins, this card pairs very nicely with a Blood Moon. Goblin King has had numerous reprints over the years and has had some really interesting arts.

Goblin Chieftain: I always felt like this was the strongest lord we can run as it not only gives our critters +1/+1 but also haste. An absolute MVP in Krenko decks as granting haste means we can tap Krenko straight away and make even more buffed hastey goblins. Goblin Chieftain was introduced in the M10 core set and had been a goblin staple ever since.

Goblin Warchief: Another classic goblin lord and a very powerful one as well. Where it may lack the +1/+1 anthem ability of the other lords it makes up for it with the cost reduction it grants for the rest of the goblins in our hand. Often paired with cards like Mogg War Marshall for incredible value. This card is quite a bit older than Goblin Chieftain, as it was first printed in the Scourge set in 2003. It has also been reprinted numerous times making super available and affordable. I believe this is actually one of the most played lords in multiple formats, I've never seen a Chieftain in a legacy deck but I have seen many Warchiefs.

Hobgoblin Bandit Lord: The first of the newer cards featured this time. Hobgoblin Bandit Lord differs slightly from the older classic lords in the fact it has 3 toughness where the older ones only have 2. Again we see the +1/+1 anthem but also the powerful second ability that doubles up as removal to hit opposing creatures or even a bit of reach to finish off our opponent. This card has only ever had one printing in the 2021 Adventures of the Forgotten Realms set.

Rundvelt Hordemaster: The first ever and only current 2 mana goblin lord, Hordemaster is in a league of its own. Combining the classic +1/+1 anthem with its own unique second ability that fixes one of the biggest weaknesses in goblin decks; card draw. Turning something goblins do best(dying) into a way for goblins to do something they can't normally do. Yes, it's not true card draw but it's almost as good. I highly doubt we will see any more goblins as strong as this one for a long time. Another card with only one printing, Dominaria United 2022.

Dropkick Bomber: The final card on our list and the newest lord to date. Dropkick Bomber again gets 3 toughness and the +1/+1 anthem for 3 mana locking it firmly into a playable lord position. The second ability is useful but with a downside. Definitely good for that final turn finishing off our opponent and flying over their blockers, or if we have a way to use the death triggers (à la Hordemaster or Pashalik Mons). Of all the cards featured here this one is probably the most lackluster unless you have a way to make the ability work for you. Technically 2 printings but both in 2024 and in paired sets, Foundations and Foundations Jumpstart.

There we go, smashed it. After a long hiatus I've finally caught back up with Mogg of the Month.
If you like the website/articles/goblins leave a comment as it will certainly motivate me to keep writing.

    1. Snoop was MotM in September.
The combo isn't slept on at all, it was one of the top modern decks in 2020.

Goblin Foundations

Magic Foundations is a new set due to launch on November 15th. Replacing the old core set model, Foundations will remain Standard legal for the next 5 years. The set will bring 15 goblins into the Standard format, of which 4 of them are brand new goblins. This is very welcome after the last two set releases contained exactly zero goblins. Let's take a look at the new cards we're getting! Dropkick Bomber is definitely the one to watch out for in the latest release of goblin cards. A new goblin lord to bolster our armies is always welcome. This card will definitely see play in Standard, Pioneer and EDH, but also possibly Modern and Legacy. It's second ability can be viewed as both a way to give our goblins a bit of reach and evasion but also a construed sacrifice outlet. Courageous Goblin isn't as exciting. A 2/2 body for two mana is more than fair for an average goblin, but this would be better suited to decks with bigger creatures to support so the +1/+0 and Menace can ...

Mogg of the Month November '24: General Kreat, the Boltbringer

November has been a very good month for goblin players. With the release of Magic Foundations and Foundations: Jumpstart,  both featuring a plethora of exciting new goblin cards, it was a little difficult to pick which one to feature this month. But we can only have one, and this time around... Mogg of the Month for November 2024 is General Kreat, the Boltbringer ! This was the biggest response I have ever had from my fellow goblin players when asking who to feature as Mogg of the Month, and while there are always some great suggestions, General Kreat and one other new card really stood out. Ultimately I have decided to feature Kreat this month, but there is a very high chance that next month will also feature a new goblin card Featuring a brand new card as Mogg of the Month can leave me with little to write about, however it is clear that General Kreat is going to make waves wherever it sees play. Printed in Foundations: Jumpstart -  which is the third edition of Jumpstart -...

Duskmourn: House of Zero Goblins

Another set with no goblins! Don't get me wrong. I love cliche horror tropes as much as the next guy, but surely goblins would have fit into this set somewhere. Bloomburrow was understandable, goblins aren't cute and fluffy therefore wouldn't fit into that set, but come on! Would a goblin be out of place here?  Anyway rant over. We did get a couple new lands: I doubt either will see much play in our decks other than standard. Pioneer and above already has a much better manabase available to it. The Duskmourn set and play environment however does seem exciting and a stark contrast to the fluffy wonderland of the previous one. The standard format should look amusing while people equip a chainsaw to a mouse for the next 3 years. Looks like the next set is going to be MTG Foundations, and I can only assume its going to be packed full of goblin staples to ensure that goblins become playable in standard again. -Trashman Disappointed Goblin Lord

Mogg of the Month October '24: Sensation Gorger

So another month passes by and that means it's time for the 5th installment of Mogg of the Month. This month I have decided to feature one of the more obscure cards in our collections, but one that is certainly worthy of a slot in our commander decks Mogg of the Month for October 2024 is Sensation Gorger! Printed only once way back in 2008 as part of the Morningtide set from Lorwyn block, Sensation Gorger is a card that some goblin players may not even know about. There are two things to note about Sensation Gorger, it's insane art and it's wicked ability. First let's look at it's art. What is even going on here? It gets worse the longer you look at it! Sensation Gorger's ability is fantastic for our EDH decks with a high number of goblin cards: Kinship — At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with Sensation Gorger, you may reveal it. If you do, each player discards their hand, then draws fou...

Mogg of the Month September '24: Conspicuous Snoop

It's another month and another installment of Mogg of the Month. I could only hold off for so long before awarding it to this multi format all-star goblin... Mogg of the Month for September 2024 is Conspicuous Snoop! Printed in the M21 core set way back before the pandemic. It seems so long ago now, but Snoop is a relatively newer card compared to the multitudes of goblins available to us. Conspicuous Snoop quickly became a powerhouse in goblin decks across multiple formats. From its hilarious artwork to its powerful abilities, Snoop has earned its spot as a fan favorite and a competitive staple in the goblin tribe. Conspicuous Snoop brought something goblins didn’t have before—a balance between card advantage, board control, and combo potential. It’s no longer just about being aggressive with "8-whack" strategies; with Snoop, goblin decks can play a more calculated, midrange game, or pivot into a full-on combo deck depending on what’s needed. What Snoop did for goblin ...
